A fast-paced, intense, and emotional game — yet for some reason, almost no one watches it. Have you already guessed what we’re talking about? Yes, it’s handball! Over the past few years, it has continued to impress: ticket sales are growing, and more and more athletes and public figures are getting involved. But for some strange reason, when compared to football, handball doesn’t even come close — and the gap isn’t closing. Why is this amazing sport pushed into the shadows? In this article, we’ll try to tell you everything you need to know about the « heart of handball. »

Fast, Fierce, Overlooked

A match of handball gives players 60 minutes of relentless gameplay, on average scoring 54 goals and maintaining shot speeds of over 100 km/h. Players exchange between offense and defense every few seconds. Bodies crash into each other. Strategies develop. Even with the action, the sport is still considered niche. Why?

It’s quite difficult to answer this question. Handball is behind tennis, basketball, and, by a long shot, football. Even in Europe, where this sport is most popular, it often fades into the background. For example, more than 4 million fans attend the German Handball-Bundesliga season. A lot? On the one hand, yes, but on the other… The 2023 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship was watched by 700 million people, and the number of bets made on it through the MelBet Kenya betting site is more than the number of fans in the German Handball-Bundesliga. It’s hard to get into your head, right? It is believed that passion exists in handball. The quality is unsurpassed. So what is missing?

Handball’s Hidden Thrills

Newcomers who view handball for the first time are usually taken aback by its speed, strength, and grace. This sport is a total package for those who want the complete view. Here is what they view:

  • Combustive Pace: In games, opponents sprint, leap, and shoot, all in 5–7 second fastest streaks. During the matches, more than 120 attacks are made, maintaining peaks of effort.
  • Strategic Thinking: The need to change instantly from defensive strategies such as 6-0, 5-1, or 3-2-1 formations and rely on rapid decision-making creates deep tactical shifts. Every move has consequences, even each substitution and screening.
  • Brute Strength: Elite athletes like Dika Mem, Nikola Karabatić, and Mikkel Hansen combine immense height, incredible endurance, and unmatched skills in a manner that is seldom encountered outside the NBA.
  • Final Drama: The last few seconds of the game are the most suspenseful. Imagine the over 32 points scored, tied handball game, and then shooting each other down for the title. Total chaos!

The sport is not normal. It is captivating. And the one who saw it even once will remember it for life.

Crowds Growing, Spotlight Missing

The numbers confirm it; handball as a sport has an active live following. PSG Handball, Kielce, and Barcelona consistently fill their stadiums, and the noise? It’s beyond words. The European Championship Final in 2024 had an arena of 20,000 in Hamburg, which was fully booked in less than two days after the tickets were released.

In France, handball ranks as the second most actively played team sport after football. Poland recently recorded their league reaching over a million season tickets sold for the first time. Even so, handball games are rarely broadcast on television, and advertising revenue is significantly lower than that of other sports known to have bigger audiences. People have enthusiasm, but not enough attention is being drawn to the sport.

Media Love: Still All About Soccer

Let’s face it: football takes the spotlight. Even while handball tournaments are being held, sports channels seem to be more interested in gossiping about transfers than showing the semifinal matches live. The reason is the media tends to focus on what everyone else is focused on.

In 2023 alone, international coverage of football took up 67% of the sports airtime on European television networks. This is overshadowing other sports. On the other hand, the EHF Champions League Final has less than 10% of coverage on major networks outside of the host countries. But imagine what would happen if more people were aware of what handball has to offer. The viewership would be massive!

Stars Without Fame

Handball also has its own hidden superstars, who remain a mystery to the outside world. The problem is they deserve so much more attention than they get. Let’s take a closer look.

Mikkel Hansen, the Danish playmaker, was awarded the IHF World Player of the Year title three times. That’s more than many footballers have Ballon d’Or nominations. French legend Nikola Karabatić has four Olympic medals and over 1,100 goals. Most people don’t recognize him at the airport…

Similarly, Anita Görbicz from Hungary retired with an astonishing 1,500 goals. Her contribution to women’s handball is invaluable, yet she remains outside the pop culture. Also, younger stars such as Jim Gottfridsson or Hampus Wanne have records and multi-genre trophies but are more famous as jersey numbers than actual people.

Why do you think these people are not known globally? It definitely isn’t their talent; it’s because the world has not paid attention yet.

What Fans Are Missing Out On

Haven’t you seen a handball game before? If so, be prepared, as you are going to be left surprised — it’s one of the most interesting spectacles in sports. This is what you are missing out on:

  • The Action Never Halts: Handball games have an average of 30 shifts in the front, making it impossible for any team to have a secure victory until the game ends.
  • Breakneck Pace: Thanks to passive play rules and quick restarts, there’s always something going on on the field. Players are always on the move while the clock keeps ticking.
  • Ultra Loyal Fans: Supporters bring drums, chants, and colors into the stadium. Even club matches are treated like a final during national team games.
  • Unfiltered Actions: Players scream after every block, every goal, every save. Seamless and painfully unfiltered!
  • This is what each and every game does for you in the realm of handball. Not once. Not sometimes. Every single match!

    Can Handball Break Through?

Undeniably. And, perhaps, the moment is now. With increased spectators, a quicker pace of play, and international competitions actively shattering ceilings, handball is set to make a jump to the forefront. It just needs attention. Because once the world watches — really watches — it, there will be no going back.
