Horse racing is one of the most exciting and popular sports in the whole of Africa – with huge followings in countries including South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and more. But unlike hitting a casino, betting on horse racing isn’t just about luck— you need a strategy, research, and a proper understanding of the sport and how it works.

Whether you’re betting at the track or checking out the latest horse racing odds online, going in with the right approach can definitely up your chances of picking a winner.

Here, we’re going to look at the best horse racing betting strategies to give you the very best chance.

Understand the Different Types of Horse Races

Not all horse races are the same or are created equally; there are a few different types – and here are some of the most common:

  • Flat Racing: This type is hugely popular in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria and is simply a speed-based race with no obstacles in the way.
  • Jump Racing (Steeplechase) – This type of race is more common in Europe but you can also find it in parts of Africa and they basically require horses to jump over hurdles or fences.
  • Handicap Races – In these races, horses have to carry different weights to level up the playing field which makes form analysis crucial.
  • Maiden Races – These races feature horses that have never won before, which makes it a lot trickier to predict the winner.

Analyse The Horse Form and Its Past Performance

One of the best ways to help you pick a winner is by studying the horse’s past performance. You should be looking at things such as:

  • Recent Form: A horse that has finished in the top three in its recent races has a decent chance of doing well.
  • Course and Distance Record: Some horses do better on certain tracks or over specific distances.
  • Winning Streaks: If it has won quite a few of its most recent races, it could well be in peak condition.

Think About the Jockey and the Trainer

It’s not all about the horse – a skilled jockey can make all the difference in a race.

You should look at the jockey’s experience as top jockeys usually have better tactics and control. You might also want to consider the trainer’s reputation – with the most experienced trainers being better at preparing the horses and giving them the best chances of winning. It’s also about the combination of the jockey and the horse, as some jockeys perform better with certain horses.

Track Conditions and Weather

In Africa, there are various different types of race tracks – turf or dirt and weather conditions can play a huge role in what happens next.

Some horses perform better on wet or soft ground, while others struggle – and obviously, when it comes to weather, there are some horses who might struggle with stamina when racing in hot temperatures. Generally, horses that finish strong tend to do well on dry, firm ground.

As such, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecasts and the different horses’ past performances on different track types to help you make a decision.

Betting Strategies

There are also a number of betting strategies to consider when trying your hand at horse racing betting.

  • Each-Way Betting: This is great for more uncertain races, as it means your bet will win even if your horse finishes in second or third place.
  • Dutching: Some people bet on more than one horse in the same race to give them more winning chances.
  • Lay Betting: There are some instances where you’ll be able to bet on a horse to lose instead of win.
  • Accumulator Bets: If you combine bets for more than one race into one big bet you can get much higher payouts – although it is a lot riskier.

You just need to make sure you choose the right strategy based on your tolerance.

Managing Your Money

The best bettors always manage their money and bets carefully. Here are some of our top bankroll management tips:

  • Set a Budget: Don’t bet more than you can afford to lose.
  • Have a Staking Plan: Either go for fixed staking (betting the same amount every time) or percentage staking (betting a percentage of your bankroll – usually 5% to 10%).
  • Avoid Chasing Losses: Losing happens, no matter how much you research or strategise. Accept your losses and don’t chase them by spending money you never intended to bet and can’t afford to lose!

Hopefully, you’re now prepared to enter the world of horse racing betting! Good luck, have fun and gamble responsibly!
